Why is this a hot topic? See both sides

A tariff is a tax on goods brought in from another country. Tariffs have risen sharply since 2025, and in February 2026 the Supreme Court ruled that an emergency-powers law does not let a president set them. The administration has since put many tariffs back in place under other trade laws, and the fight has moved to those laws and to Congress.

Supporters of tariffs say

For decades other countries sold cheap goods here while American factories closed. Tariffs protect jobs, bring manufacturing home, raise money and give the United States leverage in trade talks.

Opponents say

Tariffs are paid by American businesses and shoppers, not by foreign governments. They raise prices, invite other countries to hit back at American farmers and exporters, and make planning impossible for small businesses.
