Why is this a hot topic? See both sides

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is the federal agency that arrests and deports people who are in the country illegally. It has far more money and makes far more arrests than a few years ago, and its methods are argued over in Congress, in the courts and in city halls.

Supporters of tougher enforcement say

Immigration law means nothing if it is not enforced. People who are in the country illegally broke the law, and removing them protects jobs, public safety and those who waited in line. Agents cover their faces because they and their families have been threatened.

Critics say

Enforcement has swept up long-settled families and people with no criminal record, sometimes with little due process. Masked agents and arrests near schools and workplaces spread fear through whole communities.
