Why is this a hot topic? See both sides
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems that write, draw and make decisions have spread into work, school and daily life in just a few years. Washington and the states are arguing over who should set the rules, while huge new data centers raise fights over power and water.
Supporters of stricter rules say
A technology this powerful should not be left to the companies that profit from it. Rules on safety, honesty and children's use, and help for workers who are displaced, should come before the damage, not after.
Opponents say
Heavy rules written today will be out of date tomorrow and will hand the lead to China. AI is already helping in medicine, science and small business, and a patchwork of state laws would smother it.
